How to Build an Effective Finishing Process
There is no single sequence suitable for every mould: material, hardness, heat treatment, geometry and initial surface condition determine the tools, grits and working parameters. The underlying principle, however, is always the same: proceed gradually and verify the result at every stage.
Assessment
Assess the material, milling or EDM marks, defect depth and required finish.
Preparation
Remove deeper defects using suitable stones, files, rotary burrs or abrasives while preserving the geometry.
Refinement
Progressively reduce scratch depth using increasingly finer tools and grit sizes.
Superfinishing
Complete the lapping process with supports, felts and diamond compounds until the required level of gloss is achieved.

What is the difference between traditional abrasive stones and ceramic stones?
Traditional abrasive stones are available in many hardnesses and grit sizes and are used in numerous roughing and finishing stages. Ceramic stones have a very compact fibrous structure, maintain consistent cutting action and are particularly suitable for fine details, narrow slots and hard materials.
How should the grit sequence be selected?
The sequence depends on the depth of the initial marks and the required result. Each stage must completely remove the scratches left by the previous grit; excessive jumps can increase processing time and leave visible defects in the final stages.
When should diamond compound be used?
Diamond compound is used after the surface has been prepared with sufficiently fine stones or abrasives. It is applied with felts, wood or specific supports for lapping and polishing up to a high-gloss or mirror finish.
Which tools are suitable for removing EDM marks?
Depending on the roughness and geometry, abrasive stones, ceramic stones, files and linear-motion tools may be used. The work must proceed uniformly to avoid low spots and changes to the mould geometry.
