Japanese polishing stone expertise × GDS support in Italy
GDS × 3A Sangyo: Japanese abrasive stones for mold finishing
A partnership dedicated to mold makers and maintenance professionals: specialized Japanese manufacturing, application-focused selection and local technical-commercial support from GDS.
Specialization from the very beginning
3A Sangyo has manufactured abrasive polishing stones for molds since its early years
3A Sangyo was founded in Tokyo in 1970 and began producing and selling polishing stones for mold finishing from the outset, starting with its Soft Stone.
Over the years, the company has combined its stone manufacturing expertise with a deep understanding of mold & die finishing tools, developing solutions for EDM, medium finishing, fine and mirror finishing, aluminum, hardened steels and detailed polishing work.
Its manufacturing development also included the opening of a dedicated stone-cutting facility in 1985 and a new polishing-stone production plant in 1988.

The culture behind the abrasive stone
Choosing a grit is not enough: performance comes from the complete stone system
3A Sangyo describes an abrasive stone as the result of the balance between abrasive grain, grit size, structure, bond hardness and bond type, with dedicated secondary processing added when required.
Abrasive grain
The abrasive material must be matched to the mold material and to the required stock-removal behavior.
Grit and structure
Grain size and distribution influence cutting action, surface quality and behavior as the stone wears.
Bond and hardness
The ability to retain or release abrasive grains influences cutting action, shape conformity and renewal of the abrasive surface.
Secondary processing
Resins, impregnation and heat treatment can be used to adapt the stone’s behavior to specific applications.
Shape and dimensions
The stone cross-section must also be selected according to accessibility and the geometry of the area being finished.
The complete process
Stoning, polishing and lapping are connected stages: the quality of preparation directly affects the final finish.
Specialized Japanese manufacturing
An industrial product with a strong workshop culture behind it
The available sources show a specialist manufacturer with in-house production, stone-cutting operations and the ability to make stones to specific requirements. This is not a generic abrasive range, but a family of tools developed around the work of mold makers.
The GDS project also highlights a very practical craftsmanship component: for the first dual-branded production, 3A Sangyo assigned its craftspeople to determine the most suitable marking layout for each stone size and to prepare dedicated marking stamps.
This is the value we aim to bring to the Italian market: product expertise, attention to specification and continuity with a Japanese manufacturing tradition specialized in mold finishing.

Italian market development × Japanese manufacturing expertise
Dual branding
A GDS identity developed together with the manufacturer
The partnership is not intended to hide the product’s origin. Its purpose is to combine two values: a distinctive GDS product identity and the strength of AAA’s Japanese manufacturing expertise.
The ranges developed for GDS are managed as a dedicated commercial project: selection of the families to introduce, sizes and grits suitable for the Italian market, specific marking, GDS packaging, application testing and local support.
The project has just begun
A platform designed to grow with additional families
The first series is GDS BLACK STAR. From the outset, however, the project has been conceived as a platform that may later include other 3A Sangyo technologies under a dedicated GDS identity, following testing and validation.
GDS BLACK STAR
A stone for fine finishing and polishing preparation, developed from 3A Sangyo’s BLACK STONE experience and introduced by GDS in sizes and grits selected for the Italian market.
Future Orange Series
A possible future extension after testing and joint definition with AAA of the product name, specifications and market positioning.
Future Red Series
A second potential extension of the GDS × 3A Sangyo platform, subject to application testing and final selection.
The first product family
GDS BLACK STAR
The first stone in the new partnership is based on 3A Sangyo’s BLACK STONE series, a medium-soft SiC stone designed to conform quickly to detailed shapes and intended for fine finishing stages before diamond-paste polishing.
For GDS, the range will have its own visual identity and a dedicated marking agreed directly with the Japanese manufacturer.

Why this partnership
Japanese manufacturing, GDS selection and local support
Clear origin
The Japanese origin and AAA name remain visible as part of the product’s technical and commercial value.
GDS selection
The range is built around sizes, grits and applications relevant to professional mold makers in the Italian market.
Application testing
Product families are introduced progressively following tests and practical feedback from selected customers.
Local support
GDS manages availability, sampling, commercial support and technical communication with the manufacturer.
Access to AAA know-how
The partnership provides access to a broad range of stones developed for different materials and finishing stages.
An open platform
BLACK STAR is the starting point: additional families may be introduced only after testing and joint definition.
